As we went over the target we were hit 5 times. I mean direct hits. One shell exploded in back of the tail wheel & knocked [out] our control cables. We went in a diving turn I called the co-pilot & asked him if we could still fly ok & he said he was trying to get the AFCE working. We leveled off and started to try and get in formation of B-24\u2019s when some fighters hit us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
they knockt out #3 engine and we went into another spin. I was trying to get the door off and fell out, I guess. I don\u2019t remember what happened after I started kick on the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next thing I knew I was falling. When I hit I managed to put a few miles between me and where I landed before I was caughted [sic]. They took me right back to the ship I didn\u2019t know it was ours and I don\u2019t think the Jerry\u2019s did either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I saw McGill and Richards dead and three others. I\u2019m not sure who they were. I think they were Davenhaver [Dauenhauer], Mahy and Patterson. The Jerry\u2019s made me help load them on a truck then we went to Pisoney. From what Sylvia, the ball turret gunner says, they are buried there in back of the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I also saw Lt. Wainwright there but didn\u2019t want to let on I knew him. The ball turret operator bailed out after I did but never saw him until a few months later in the prison Camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
