Aircraft No. 599 apparently was hit by flak at the target. Three or four minutes after bombs away the aircraft was seen to leave the formation with No. 3 and No. 4 engines feathered. The aircraft was heard to call for fighter escort and was last seen over the Vosges Mountains, west of Strasbourg with 5 fighters escorting it. Radio conversations report the aircraft may have been trying to make an emergency field in allied occupied France. Aircraft was last seen at an estimated altitude of 10000 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
