When I first noticed B-17 No. 889 it seemed as if it couldn’t keep up with the formation and about 0930/0940 hours, it salvoed part of its bombs. It then tried to stay up with the formation but couldn’t, and peeled off to the left, going at a 270 degree heading, maintaining altitude, and in no apparent trouble.

2Lt. I observed it to salvoe its bombs (6 X 500 Gp’s) at about 1049 hours. It seemed as if the aircraft couldn’t keep up. It seemed to both gain and lose speed. The aircraft turned left low enough to clear the formation and took an approximate heading of 215 degrees. It may have been heading for Switzerland. It seemed to be in no apparent trouble.

S/Sgt. Chris C. This was. About 15/20 minutes before the target when the aircraft turned about 110 degrees left, and headed over the Alps Mts. Two (2) pursuit aircraft headed in the same direction. I thought they were P-51’s for they had red tails. This was the last I saw of B-17 No. 889.

S/Sgt. Joe D. I saw B-17 no. 889 drop all his bombs and leave the formation under full control and watched the aircraft until it was out of sight, all the time he was going down at a normal rate of speed. The aircraft seemed to be under control.

Sgt. Joseph A.
