#399 and #916 from this group slid out of the formation at 0956 and were never identified thereafter, that is as to number. One A/C was seen at 1015 [hours] at an altitude of 23,000 feet with inboard engines out steadily dropping back with 3 enemy aircraft on it. At 1020 [hours] there was a huge ball of fire from under wings followed by a thick black burst like flak. Aircraft started down in dive and observing aircraft lost sight of it.
This aircraft was last seen at 51°55’N 06°20’E by Lt. Robert H. Davis – at 1020 hours.
The other aircraft was last seen at 1005 [hours] at 52°00’N 05°45’E going down under control trailing small amount of smoke.
