My father. James J Matthews Jr, was the bombardier on Round Trip Topsy’s I’ll fated last fight. After it was damaged by enemy fighters with two engines on fire, my father crawled through the under belly of the plane to free the bombs wedged in the bombay doors. Lt. Warren Smith, the pilot, was going to recommended my father for the Silver Star but he was killed action in January 1945 when his B 17 was shot down.
