B-17F 42-29941 last seen with number 2 engine afire and number 4 engine feathered. It slipped back out of my sight and I did not see any more of him.

B-17F 42-29941 was last seen at 1510 prior to turning from target. At this time, ship 42-30864 started to go down. When I saw 42-29941, his engine were all turning over okay but he seemed to be banking to the right to avoid running into 42-30864, which had continued on course over the target area. This ship, 42-29941, must have been hit as he climed and banked to avoid the other ship, for he never did come up to take his “would be” position in the first element of the lead squadron.
