what is the basis of the addition the nickname to the serial number? Certainly it is not the image.
The nose art of the 96th. BG B-17F-DL labeled as Dottie J III shows only “Dottie” with no “J” nor no III. That post also contains use comments association Dottie J III to a B-17G-VE PFF of the 97th BG, MTO. The timeline of II here is not intuitive with its loss in December, 1943.
In conclusion, this pairing of the version II nickname to the image, and thus s/n, begs further documentation.
