The Pociecha listed to this plane was my great uncle Raymond(1919-2011). I’m pretty sure he was the navigator. On this specific flight on may 7th, 1944, he has said that there actually was a single casualty, a secret Italian diplomat that was onboard. After he and the rest of the crew were rescued in the Adriatic, Ray and a lot of the same names were assigned to a new b-17, 42-3383/Spirit of McCook. When this plane “exploded over Bucharest” he survived, but taken as a pow in Romania. He said the Romanian prisons were quite nice, very well maintained, and was regularly visited by a princess named Catherine.
