Regarding B-17 42-31677. My father was the pilot on this aircraft on Mission 197 (12 Oct 44, Bremen) and Mission 198 (14 Oct 44, Cologne) flying with the 548th of the 385th Bomb Group. On Mission 198, the aircraft lost an engine over the target and had a 2nd engine malfunction after the Bomb run. He landed the aircraft in Brussels and was recommended for the DFC.

My grandfather served on this ship for many missions between Dec. 1944 and May 1945. I am only now learning details of his military record thanks to the Internet. As my learning curve is only now beginning, I would appreciate any information you could share about Satan’s Mate, its missions and life aboard it. Any shared photos would be wonderful for our family records. Best regards to you Mr. Hamilton, Sincerely, W Moore

Re B-17 42-31677 (continued). There were no injuries and the crew was ferried back to Great Ashfield. At the time he flew the aircraft, it had been renamed “Big Chief” and had the visage of an indian chief with war bonnet painted on it. The plane was salvaged from Brussels.
