During its final mission on 10 May 1944, Gerald Nagel’s aircraft dropped back from formation in order to defend Abel Mabel (42-31826) that had lost 3 engines and couldn’t keep up with the squadron. Nagel and crew were subsequently shot down. This information comes from a letter that was written by Barney McLaughlin (pilot of Abel Mabel) to the mother of the top turret gunner, Chuck “Chas” Asadoorian.
