Following statement made by 2nd Lt. William H. Craighead
The formation was attacked by between thirty and forty fighters including ME 109s and FW 190s. Aircraft 42-39954 feathered one engine and dropped back out of the formation. It was then hit by six or seven fighters and went down in flames. Aircraft 42-3994 exploded upon hitting the ground.
