I’m confused in that there appear to be two different aircraft using the name “Ugly Duckling”. I believe 42-97338 was named “The Ugly Duckling” and was renamed “Tarheel Lemon” after Lt. Bruce Binger completed his tour and the aircraft changed crews. Lt. Binger, in his personal account, references he did most of his missions in 338 and there is a photo of him and his crew in front of “The Ugly Duckling”. However there is another aircraft 42-102565 that is also named “The Ugly Duckling” that was shot down and destroyed Nov 26, 1944. Did these two names cross paths and the name “The Ugly Duckling” used again on 565?
