Statements of Eyewitnesses
I, Sgt. Williams D. Dangerfield, was acting as Ball Turret Gunner in Aircraft No. 43-37561, 533rd Bomb. Sq. (H), which was flying in the left wing position in the same flight with Lt. Germano’s Aircraft, on the 10th September of 1944, when Lt. Germano was reported as missing.
When I first noticed Lt. Germano ot of formation, he was flying at a 90° angle to our formation to the rear. His number 1, 2, and 3 engines were smoking. He flew along in normal flight until he disappeared from my view.
I, Sgt. Robert E. Tyler, was acting as Waist Gunner in Aircraft No. 43-37561, 533rd Bomb. Sq. (H), which was flying in the left wing position in the same flight with Lt. Germano’s Aircraft, on the 10th of September 1944, when I saw Lt. Germano peel out of formation.
He banked off to the right at 90° from the formation, then he made another 180° turn and flew directly across the back of our formation. He flew along until he was out of my sight. Three engines were smoking when I last saw him.

This is the plane my Grandfather Dick Tierney was shot down in. He wrote several letters home from POW camp about how this war and the efforts of his servicemen should never be forgotten. This history is amamzing and I am so proud to be the product of a US Airman.

Drew, do you know if any of the letters mentioned my great uncle Harry Siders? He was the one KIA. It may interest you that I have a copy of your grandfather’s statement after the war about the crash. Feel free to email me at justin.linnert@gmail.com and I can give you a copy.

My Great Uncle Harry Siders (tail gunner) was shot down in this plane, he made it out but landed in a tree and broke his neck. My grandmother’s family recent a letter from a woman in Germany who said they buried him, not sure what happened to the letter.

My Grand Father John Diedrich was also aboard this aircraft the day she perished. I am further researching the topic for a work presentation. He was the radio Operator. His story went that they hit flack that brought 3 engines offline. The order to jump was given and they all made it out alive. TG SGT Siders was found deceased and assumed shot while approaching the ground. My grandpa lost his boots during the jump because he kept them loose. They were captured by local farmers the 2nd day and held 229 days in captivity. He kept a detailed diary on the crew and their activities. My family is attempting to recreate hi res photos and share them as well as to get the original into the POW museum… Mr. Linnert, I would really like to have a copy of that letter. God Bless,
Dan

Hi Dan, that’s really awesome to hear your grandfather’s story! I’m so glad he survived the war. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to locate the letter yet. Several family members have been looking. The story goes that a woman in Germany who buried my Great Uncle sent a letter to the army and the army sent it on to my family. Although I don’t have the letter I have talked to the other Daniel who commented above you and lives near the crash site. Daniel has sent me photos showing where the crash site is located, a German book discussing the crash and even a short video with parts from Ft. Worth Gal! If you care to share your email address I can pass them on to you.
