My father John E. Birdsall was in the crew of the B-17 “Leave Us Face It” as turret gunner and enlisted bombardier. He is credited with 34 missions on his “Lucky Bastard Club” certificate but said that he flew one more after he got the document. His retirement certificate says 35. He told us about the replacement of the original airplane with another when the crew deemed it not air worthy. He told us about the loss by theft of the bomber jackets for the entire crew while they were hung on pegs in the hallway of a London Pub. He described the mascot and nose art of the airplane being Lace from the Steve Canyon Comic strip and the origin of the name coming from that same source.
