My father, James Engard Morony ( please note the correct spelling) was the tail gunner on the Libery Queen when it went down near Leipzig. He was a POW for 9 months. I have letters and clippings.
I also have documents from the MIA archives near Washington DC that have statements from the 9 surviving crew about what they knew about the pilot Frank Fusco. He was considered MIA. Do you have information about whether or not he was found?
My dad died at age 63. I have regretted that i didnt spend more time listening to his stories. I’ve heard that many war vets did not like to share stories. My dad would tell anyone who was interested.
I would love to find others who are interested in sharing information about this crew, and their escape from the POW camp in June of 45.
Please contact me. I live in Maryland and came to here about the Mighty Eighth while driving through Georgia on the way home from Florida.
I would love to donate what I have and talk to other families.

This crash is dealt with in two German reports (KU reports), KU 2526 and KU 865A.
KU 2526 mixes up two different crashes, but a few pages are clearly related to 43-37624.
These state that B-17G LL-P white A serial 337624 black F crashed at the road from Glauchau to St. Egidien, 1 km from St. Egidien und 20 July 44 at 11:00.
Dated 28 July 1944 the mayor of St Egidien reports the discovery of a dead body from the “USA bomber crashed here on 20 July 1944” and of his dog tag.
Unfortunately no name or information about the dog tag ist given. It think it would have been Lt. Fusco.
The body was buried in St. Egidien.
Frank Fusco is not among the MIA listed by DPAA, so apparently he has been found and identified at some unknown point in time.
