Eyewitness Statements
On the mission to Maribor, Yugoslavia, I was flying #7 position. At the target we encountered very accurate flak. Immediately after the bomb run Ship #42-102836 pulled off from the formation. About 5 minutes later I heard 836 trying to contact 003. He was unable to do so, so I answered him. He said he had two engines out and was losing altitude. He asked if I could get him fighter protection. I called the fighter cover for him.
I tried several times to contact 836 later on, but failed to do so. About 1110 hours, Ship #44-6782 made contact with 836 and I heard 836 say he was throwing out equipment to hold altitude. That is the last I heard from him.

On the mission to Maribor, Yugoslavia, 1 April 1945 I was flying number 6 position in the box. Ship #42-102836 was flying number 2 position. When we rallied from the target, 836 feathered his number 4 engine. He called on VHF and said he was losing altitude but was following the formation. He added that he was trying to get escort and that he intended to go to Foggia as he had a wounded man aboard. My tail gunner kept him in sight for 30 minutes. He lost sight of him at approximately 1110. That was the last we saw or heard of him.
