Our Group was hit by intense and accurate flak over Brux, Czecho. We were briefed to avoid this area which was 40 miles east of I.P. For some reason we did not make our run on the target but circled over this flak area until shot down. Why??

Remarks to the loss of B-17G 43-38001
A/C 8001 was hit by flak in the right wing in the vicinity of Brux. Fire broke out immediately and the a/c peeled off to the right and lost altitude, apparently under control. When last seen, this a/c was at an altitude of approximately 12,000, It is believed that nine (9) men left this a/c, all using parachutes.
