It was shot down about thirteen miles northwest of Pagerugnan airfield, at around 14,000ft and 0905hrs (Java time) on a mission to Kendari airfield. The B-17s attacking were attacked by twelve A6M Zeros making head-on attacks, and 41-2492 was hit by gunfire in one such attack and flew erratically, almost crashing into a Zero, before catching fire and losing altitude. One man bailed out before it fell into some clouds and exploded. None of the men on board were ever found.
