B-17 41-24588 / Carter and His Little Pills
Assigned to the 364BS/305BG at Presque Isle, Maine 19-Oct-42; Grafton Underwood 25-Oct-42; Missing in Action 8-Mar-43. Aircraft was on a mission to bomb the railroad marshalling yards at Rennes, France. The aircraft sustained battle damage from anti-aircraft fire and enemy fighter attacks. Ditched in Channel ten miles off Selsey Bill, UK on return. 10KIA Missing Air Crew Report 15718.

Joseph W. Carter was my great uncle on my dad’s side of the family. His younger brother, 2LT Harold D. Carter, died on May 8, 1943, exactly two months after Joseph, also a pilot, flying a C-46, plane number 41-15180.

Robert R. Gray should be Robert A. Gray. The A was for Azel, which is what his mother called him but he went by Bob. He was also qualified as a navigator and flew missions as both co-pilot and navigator. I have his uniforms, wartime letters and some personal items. He was from Oklahoma City.

I meant to say Robert A Gray was also a trained bombardier, not navigator.
