The after mission report contains the following:

No flak observed enroute target. From approximately 1118 hours until 1122 hours encountered moderate to heavy, accurate, tracking flak over Berlin at 26,500 feet altitude. Flak bursts black. No rockets observed.

Aircraft 547-F, pilot Daley, lagging , reported to leader at 1140 hours that one engine was out, another losing gasoline.

And the Missing Air Crew Report Number 12283 contains the remarks:

Intense, accurate tracking flak from 4 minutes before bombs away, lasting 8 minutes. No enemy aircraft encountered by this group.

When formation was 2/3 of way across the English Channel, Lt. Daley was heard to say he thought he could reach English Coast. Was not heard from since.

2Lt. Jesse L. Patten picked up the messages over VHF.
