What a moving story! Thank everyone for sharing this and getting in contact! Like Holger who I´ve just e-mailed I am doing research about the destiny of the brave crew, hoping that they survived the war and to find ancestors. Like you are, Aaron! Roy Stewart was my Brother-in-Law. He passed several years ago while living in Bonner, Montana. His wife, Jean Stewart, my older sister passed in the early 2000’s also while living in Bonner. Son, David still lives there. His three daughters are living in different locations but I don’t know where. I last spoke to his daughter, Deborah Jean, just before her mother passed. Roy was my young idol and the main reason I joined the USAF.

Hello Don, I am so glad that we do have a chance to keep the memory of this crew alive. As a matter of fact we are planning to do a documentary about them as their story mingles with another event connected to the way Roy Stewart and Jack Henley found their way to the pow camp in Montabaur where they didn´t have to wait long to be freed by the US-troops just like germany was (thanks to the bravery of men like them..!) when war was over. Hi Don, my name is Holger, I am German, ex military. I am doing some research on B 17 “Verna E.” The damaged plane flew over our village and crashed approx. 7 kilometers from here into a forest. 5 of the crew were captured right by our village and taken into a house. The rest was captured later in the vicinity. I wonder if you could send me one ore two photos from the plane when it landed in Hardwick. Any information on the event from us here in Germany, I would be more than happy to share, if anyone is interested. Hope Don Morrison will receive my message, since the correspondence is already more than 4 years old.

Roy Stewart was my uncle. I only met him once as a boy . He was a very romantic figure in my family. War hero!
My farther, William E Stewart was the older brother of Roy. He was a sargent in the marine corps. and fought several big battles in the south pacific(Guam,Iwo, etc)

I am so glad to have found this site as a tribute to those brave men on their mission to liberate Europe! Any contact to living descendants is very welcome as I am a friend of a contemporary who as a boy had an encounter assumably with the men of the Verna-E which left an everlasting impression on him.
