Extract form S-2 Mission Report Regarding B-17G 42-107199

At 0815 hours near 49°10’N-02°50’W at about 21000 feet, aircraft #199 flying #5 position in lead squadron, 390 A Group, observed to fall out of formation with one engine (#3 or #4) smoking. Aircraft then completed several steep dives and climbs and was last observed in a dive as it entered undercast (top of which reported to have been at about 19000 feet). 1 to 6 chuted reported. Several crews reported chutes and delayed jumps. One crew reported 8 men bailed out, with only one chute seen to open. Two crews reported 7 men jumped and that one of these fell out of his chute after it opened, the other six being delayed jumps. One crew reported five chutes including one man who fell out of chute after it opened.
