My Uncle Laurence (Lawrence) Madden was the Co-pilot on the flight that ended in the crash landing. In his letters home he referred to this as “the crack-up”. It hit him pretty hard. Just over a month later, while flying to Lavariano, Italy on B17 41-24395 (I Do Dit), the aircraft along with 5 crewmembers, including my uncle, were lost near Udine.
