Radio Operator T/Sgt Melvin Wilson was my uncle. He had recently completed his 25th mission and was scheduled to come home. While awaiting his orders to ship out, he was on this flight to check out the recently repaired aircraft (there was a second Fortress in the air at the same time, also being checked out following repairs).
One correction to the above information: the crash occurred in 1944, not 1943. See https://www.381stbg.org/lc3.php and look for the incident on 31 March 1944.
