Since 2007 we adopted the grave of Joe Kinney at the American Cemetery in Margraten the Netherlands. Do you perhaps have available a photo of the crew of B17 42 29796? The only photo available until now is from his graduation at high school. I assume there are more photo’s available of the crew in Kimbolton. Awaiting comment. Thanks, Harry Wouters

Hi Harry. My name is Peter Dee. I live in Solihull england. I am impressed with your adoption of Joe kinneys grave and am hopeing that we might have information to exchange. My interest began in 1976 when passing through kimbolton i read the rememberance book of the 379th bg. One name rang bells with me and has been with me ever since that day. Joe Kinney. Since some years I found information about his family in USA and contacted them. On a regular basis we exchange some information via Facebook. If you can send me your e-mail address, I can forward some additional info and photographs. Until now I foud only 1 picture of Joe Kinney. Via some contacts in the Netherlands I received a picture of Richard A. Howell (also a crew member) Best regards, Harry

I am quite surprised to see your recent correspondence regarding Joe Kinney. My great uncle was crew member John Coniglio (navigator). I did quite a bit of research about five years ago to share with my mother. I have information on the three crew members who survived the crash (the last passed in 2003), their German POW reports, other information on the mission, and I learned that there is a monument at Vries Cemetery in The Netherlands that is dedicated to the crew. It includes Joe and Johnny’s names.

Uncle Joe was my mother’s oldest brother. She always told me I was the spitting image of him (although I’m not so sure about that). I’ve had a lifelong affection and admiration of the B-17 perhaps as a result of Uncle Joe’s sacrifice. I served 34 years with the USAF and flew for 7 Years as a C-130 Loadmaster. I was volunteering as a docent at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Az until Covid temporarily rendered our services there too risky. However one of my old commanders is director of the 390th Bob Group Museum and asked me a year ago too volunteer there, and that’s where I’ve been for a year now. So pleased with your adoption of my uncle. I haven’t visited his grave yet but look forward to traveling to Europe once this hysteria opens up the air service again. And if you ever find yourself out in the great American Southwest, please come to Tucson and see our beautiful museum. Cheers.

Hi Hal. I read your post about your uncle Joe with great interest. I live about 50 miles from Kimbolton and im a big fan of the 379th bg. Your uncles name is in the remembrance book in kimbolton church. I think you and i might be around same age and from what youve said it looks like we both had a good life. I never lose sight of the fact that your uncle Joe and others like him actually made that possible. Would love to learn more about him. Joseph kinney married laura E ? In may 1943 possibly in california. She put an obituaty in the boston globe listing her as laura kinney. Spouse. I can find no trace of her or the wedding and dont know her maiden name. Can anyone please help. My email address. Pdeemobmech@yahoo.co.uk
