B-17 42-30199 / The Wicked WAAC Details

Statement from S/Sgt. Linden K. Voight

Plane was attacked by enemy fighters on 14 October 1943 in the vicinity of Frankfurt, Germany. One engine was knocked out of commission, the interphone system was not operating, the tail guns had been rendered useless and both wings of the plane were on fire. My right foot was blown off, the tail gunner, S/Sgt. Williams, had been struck by a bullet which passed through his kidney, Lt. Wood, the navigator was dead at his post and the radio operator, Sgt. Lewis appereared dased. I bailed out at 26500 feet abd later learned that other members of the crew including the badly injured S/Sgt. Williams bailed out successfully. I struck a tree when I landed and broke my right elbow and dislocated my right shoulder. I fell from the tree and broke my left foot.
