The granddaughter (Kadie Andersen) of the pilot (Lt. Loy Petersen) gave me a copy of her grandfather’s diary to read. It was beautifully written in cursive and I found it most interesting. The diary covered the pilot’s entire 32 missions that he flew and the tragedy he experienced seeing many of the members of his squadron being shot down by flak or enemy fighters. It is only by reading of his experiences that one can truly appreciate the cost of the freedom we all have today.
