Eyewitness Statements
Foutz was flying #3 in the 2nd Element High Squadron. I saw flak burst close by his ship about half way between coast and target. No. 1 and No. 2 engines started smoking badly and he dropped slowly back, out of formation.

According to a letter written home to his sister on 7/25/43 Richard (Dick) Sandberg states his plane was called “Angel of Destruction”. And that there was a “pretty girl” painted it.
