History of
B-17 42-3438
Delivered Denver 23/6/43; Dow Fd 19/7/43; Assigned 337BS/96BG [AW-F] Snetterton 20/7/43; transferred 36BS for Radio Counter Measures, Sculthorpe 1944. Missing in Action Heligoland 30/10/44, with Lts with Gaither & W. Dunnuck. Intended for submarine pens of Heligoland. Due to bad weather target could not be seen and A/C was re-directed towards Berlin but the plane run out of fuel somewhere over North sea and crashed.

There seems to be a mix-up of the records for the two drones. 42-30066 was directed towards central Germany, however it crashed in Sweden.
42-3438’s faith was as follows, according to “388th B.G. Intelligence Report – Aphrodite Mission No. 13 30 October 1944.”:
“The second drone was under control up to four degrees East when controls went out. Control was reestablished at five degrees East and was maintained to the I.P. When turning the drone at the I.P., it went out of control and took a heading of 345 degrees. All efforts to turn or dive the drone failed, although the control ship followed it to 54 degrees 28″ N – 07 degrees 10″ East. The mother ship turned back at this point at 1358 o’clock, leaving the drone on a heading of 345-349 degrees at an altitude of 200 feet.”
It is still true it crashed somewhere over North Sea
