Eyewitness Statements to the loss of B-17G 42-37755 / Dottie G
A ME 110 came in from 6 o’clock, level. He made a pass at our squadron, which was high squadren, high group, then this ship was seen to have #1 and #3 engine smoking. He left the formation slipping off on one wing in a steep dive. He dived for about 5,000 feet. The engine stopped smoking. He then turned south and appeared to be heading for Switzerland, He was under control when last seen. He was trying te gain altitude to go over the Alps. There was light flak near the Swiss border.
S/Sgt. Erwin R. Melvin
327th Bomb Sq. (H)
The ship left the formation ahead of us just after we had passed the IP. As the ship left the formation the bombs were salvoed. From what I could see all four engines were still running and the ship had not lost altitude. Apparently he had been hit by enemy aircraft.
