42-37969 “Old Irongut” was piloted by my Grandfather Jonathan “Jack” Youk Jr. Seeing these pictures of the B-17 he flew brings back a lot of great memories of his war stories. The men who flew on these planes were heroes and truly members of the Greatest Generation.

My great uncle died over Germany in this plane when it was shot down. Aaron Reid Kochel. My namesake. I’m Aaron James Kochel. If any one has photos of Old Ironguts or the crew or stories I would sure appreciate it extremely! Thank you!

Aaron, there were two B-17s with this name. One with “Old Irongut” tail #42-37969 and the other with “Old Iron Gut” tail #42-37612 (which was lost over Germany). I believe this is the plane your Great Uncle was on when it was hit by flak over Hamburg, Germany. He died a hero. God bless him and your family.

Questin Youk: do you have any info or pictures of your grandfather? I believe my grandfather was flight engineer/ top turret gunner on this aircraft. Would love to know more.

Casimir, I do have several photographs of my Grandfather and other crew members. It might take me a little time to find them as they are in storage. What was your Grandfather’s name?
