This plane was named by its pilot, William E. Stevenson, who was from Texas in honor of the many “cow towns” there. Stevenson was ill the day it was interned in Sweden with Robert C. Schimmel as its pilot.

My father Charles Mueller was a navigator and picked up Schimmel after his crew bailed out and Schimmel flew the plane alone back to England. Schwimmer said the war was o er for him, but soon they sent him up again in a different B-17, waved goodbye to my Dad, and flew the plane & crew to Sweden. My Dad never saw him again…my Dad spent a yr+ at Stalag Luft III and then onto Stalag VII, eventually being freed by Patton…..
