My great uncle was S/SGT Mack D. Walton. Tail gunner on B-17 42-5225 / Stormy Weather aka V-Packette. I see that there were two men on the crew who survived and was hoping someone could help me in locating either of them or the families. Hope to obtain some information on my great uncle who I never got to meet but was raised hearing stories from his brother

Hello Terry,
were you able to find the information on the two survivors on the crash? I am also researching this and am interested in learning more.
Thank you,
Tom

My grandfather was William Wannemacher. I have a letter written by Lt. Walter S. Brown, Jr., to my grandmother in 1945 explaining the last moments before they went down. It is very interesting to read. Just fyi. Reading the book The Schweinfurt-Regensburg Mission by Martin Middlebrook, trying to put all the pieces together.

The three B-17s of the 323rd BS/91st BG (“Stormy Weather” as well as, https://b17flyingfortress.de/en/b17/42-29559-stupntakit/ and https://b17flyingfortress.de/en/b17/41-24524-the-eagles-wrath/) were in the low formation of the 91st (“Purple Heart Corner”) and were all shot down by fighters on the raid. “Stormy Weather” was the first to go down, as it was the “Tail-end Charlie” and went down in flames during the first attack by fighters. Two men bailed out and the rest of the crew was killed.

“Stormy Weather” was one of the three 323rd BS/91st BG bombers (along with “Stupintakit” and “The Eagle’s Wrath”) on the Schweinfurt Raid. The squadron was the low squadron (flying “Purple Heart Corner”) and “Stormy Weather” was the “tail-end Charlie” in the back. After crossing into Germany the squadron was attacked by fighters and all three planes were shot down. “Stormy Weather” went down in flames after the first attack, and only two men bailed out.
