B-17 43-38348 / Roxy’s Special Details

Statement of Eyewitness

We were at about 26,000 feet altitude. Aircraft B-17G, 43-38348, was flying lead of high squadron of the low group. We vere flying on his right wing. As we were flying from the I.P. to the target and at about 2 minutes prior to the target subject aircraft received a direct hit by flak between No. 3 engine and No. 3 fuel tank. Fire started immediately and the aircraft flew approximately 10 to 15 seconds when the right wing exploded and the aircraft fell into a flat, rather tight spin. We were able to abserve this aircraft for only a short way down. No parachutes were seen to come fro this aircraft.

2Lt. Raymond W. Schroeder

Note: Above statement concurred with by S/Sgt. Leon E. Brown, who in addition reported seeing one (1) parachute come from subject aircraft. This parachute was seen to be burning as it went down.
