Eyewiness Statement to the loss of the B-17 #42-97836 ‘Bugs Bunny Jr’
Aircraft 836 was hit by flak near Wittenburg. One burst tore off nose section – another set #3 engine on fire. Aircraft dropped out of formation apparently under control at 20000 feet. Fighter report aircraft 836 “P-PETER” belly landed in Steinboden Lake region. Plane did not blow up after landing. Fighter claim no chutes previous, but crews in this group say possibility of 4 – 6 chutes after being hit.
