THE RED GREMLIN – When the full story of the North African landing is told, the part played by the “Red Gremlin”, an American Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress piloted by Capt. Charles R. Wiley, Lafayette, Ind., will have a particular significance. This was the Fortress that brought Gen. Mark Clark from England, prior to his secret mission with French officers. Later, it proved to be the first Fortress actually to land in Africa after the landing on November 9, 1942. The plan has now participated in 70 missions over enemy territory -15 in England, 55 in Africa. Its’s crew members have destroyed 8 enemy aircraft.
