B-17 42-107040 / Shirley Jean Details

MACR 9469 for incent on mission on 15 October 1944

We encountered intense flak between the IP (Initial Point) and the target. The No. 1 engine was hit and caught fire and we had prop surge from No. 3 and No. 4 engines. We were then at 27000 feet and had started loosing altitude and I told to the crew to get ready to bail out. While I was trying to feather the No. 1 prop which I could not do because the prop governor had been shot out, the Co-Pilot feathered the No. 3 and No. 4 props. When I realized what had happened we were at 20000 feet and four men had bailed out.

I instructed the Co-Pilot to unfeather No. 3 and 4 engines and started back across Belgium and the Channel. The four (4) chutes were seen to leave the plane and open while the plane was between Cologne and Duren, between 27000 and 20000 feet.
