B-17 42-107071 Details

Twenty minutes from target no. 2 engine went out before I could feather it. The thrust bearing came out immediately and the engine caught fire. The boys called up from different stations in the ship informing me that the engine was on fire. after watching the fire for a minute or possibly a minute and a half I gabe the order to bail out. I knew that it would take a little time for the boys to get the ball turret man out and get his chute on and I didn’t want the boys to take a chance on fire. All of them were out of the ship in one minute. according to the navigator’s report they must have bailed out about 60 miles from the German border in side France. The co-pilot and I were busy watching the fire and didn’t observe whether the chutes opened or not. The co-pilot and myself landed the plane on a U.S. fighter base in France.
