Mid air collision with B-17 #42-97441
Eyewitness Statements
I was tail gunner on B-17G 42-31532, flying the lead of the High Squadron. One of the ships in question was below and one above, both slightly forward of the tail of our ship. Our ship moved out in front of them and then the lower of the two ships pulled up abruptly, colliding with the higher of the two ships. The cockpit window made contact with the bottom of the nose of the higher ship. The lower ship burst into flames, and then both ships passed from our sight. We saw no parachutes.
S/Sgt. Clyde R. Hall
We had a collision with our wing ship – I just got my chute on when ship blew up I saw three chutes below me. These men I saw later in Germany – the one’s listed in this questionnaire to the best of my knowledge are dead. I was the last one to leave the ship.
I do not know too much about this crew because I flew as a spare the day we went down.
