B-17F 42-3194 piloted by 1Lt. Robert W. Hayden was hit by enemy aircraft and over Italy 44°40′ North 09°55′ East left the formation. No chutes were seen to leave the ship, however just prior to a crash landing the aircraft was seen to explode.
