Delivered Denver 13/1/44; Lakeland 1/2/44; Morrison 9/2/44; Assigned 815BS/483BG Tortorella 30/3/44; transferred 346BS/99BG Tortorella 31/3/44, then 429BS; 41m two killed and 8 RTD when ship skidded on airfield PSP into railway embankment and broke up crashed on take off for Pardubice, Czecho. 24/8/44 and sal. 2nd PATCHES.

My grandfather was the pilot of 2nd Patches. Both of the planes!
His name was Lt. Walter Moody

Lisa, Please contact me as our grandfathers missions were very intertwined. Walter’s crew along with George Dulac trained stateside with my grandfathers crew Lt. William “Bill” A. Lt. Walter Moody was my father. Besides being a nearly lifelong pilot, he was extremely talented at building models of aircraft and sailing ships. Subsequently, my brother also became a pilot, a flight instructor and eventually pilot for the sheriff’s office, landing that plane on a county road when he lost engine power.

Lisa, My father, George DuLac, flew with Walt and always had kind words about him. I know that he respected him as a pilot and credits his skills for saving his life. Dad will be 97 on January 28, 2021. I believe he is the last survivor of the crew and often wonders why. Stay safe and healthy during these most difficult times.

I believe my uncle 2dLT/1st Lt John Nagy was bombardier on “Patches” 42107008, O guess the original. Participated in several Ploesti raids. Part of James W. O’Leary’s crew. Any other info?

carlo, you may want to check the dates for 42-107008 which was also built by Douglas at Long Beach but followed after the 42-38201. Regardless, there were occasionally instances where an older of two like-named planes was the second, however you may want to be sure about the order. Note 7008 was factory uncamouflaged being the later of the two delivered.
