I am a WWII historian based on the Ten people in my extended family who served.
In the papers of one of them, a senior officer, he recounts for 5 September 1946: “We boarded the special B-17, #6036, at 0945 and five minutes later were airborne for Paris. Hot coffee was served aboard in mid-morning flight, followed by a hot lunch, both enjoyed. We arrived at Orly Field, Paris, at 0145 hours.”
This flight originated at Marcianise Airfield, Caserta, Italy, then the HQ of the MTO, the Mediterranean Theater of Operations during the wind-down after the war. The officer was on his way to Washington for conferences related to the administration of the MTO through 1947.
That tail number, without year, is all I have. 44-6036 had already been salvaged by this time, and 42-6036 here has some reference to Transport Command. Have I got the right plane?
