Eyewitness Statement:

Capt. Smith of the 78th Fighter Group, one of the escorting fighters, said that: #1 and #2 engines on A/C 927 went out over the target, plane started back with a fighter escort of six ships. A/C 927 headed for a flak area at Ijmuiden, Holland.

Fighters tried to contact A/C 927 on VHF but to no avail, they them tried to signal him visually but no luck. A/C 927 went through the flak area and had #3 and #4 engines shot out and catch fire. Right wing fell off and plane went down in flames. It W8 seen to explode as it hit the water about 100 yds off the end of the breakwater at Ijmuiden, 3 chutes were seen and they fell in the water about 1/4 mile off shore.
