B-17 43-38175 / I’ll Be Seeing You aka ‘Til We Meet Again Details

About 1242 hours A/C 175 was hit by flak and attacked by fighters. A/C 175 peeled out of formation to right, with #1 engine afire. Left horizontal stabilizer began to disintegrate. A/C 175 dropped bomb load (containers). Waist escape hatch came off. A/C went down in controlled glide to 8000 feet at which altitude it exploded at about 1246 hours. Two chutes reported.
