#43-38297 “surrounded” by B-17s of the 390th Bomber Group. In the center of the picture, upper third, you can see a B-17 is going down.

Statement to the loss for B-17 #43-38297

Aircraft 297 was attacked by enemy aircraft at 1031 in the vicinity of 5225-1005. no. 4 engine was hit and immediately started blazing. Aircraft then went into a dive, under control, (White probably intent to put out the fire) and disappeared into the clouds still under control when last seen. One chute was seen before dispappearing.
