According to my father’s flight diary, he was the flight engineer and top turret gunner of this B-17 (named “Sweet Sue”) in the 731st Bomb Squadron. On 452nd Bomb Group mission 178, 24 Dec 1944, she was badly shot up and was forced to land at the emergency field at Laon, France. He wrote, “She was a wreck anyway. Over 70 holes, 2 engines out [#1 & #2] and the other two almost as bad, and the main spar in the right wing almost shot in two.”

thank you for sharing your father’s flight diary.
good to know this B-17 was nicknamed “Sweet Sue”.
A wonder the B-17 made it back.
