Waist gunner Sgt William N. Hess had flown sixteen missions when he was shot down in 44-8166 and survived as a POW. After the war he became an author and expert, despite being a bomber crewman, on American World War II fighter aces. He was the Official Historian of the American Fighter Ace’s Association and wrote 25 books about fighters and B-17s.
