B-17G 44-83657 was converted to a target drone director (DB-17) after having been stored until August 1949. She served in this role until taken out of service in April 1958. Apparently this aircraft carried a large “drone letter” A on the vertical stabilizer. To date have not located a verifiable photo of this aircraft. Aircraft record card was coded “inactive-flyable salvage” but with code letter D which could mean “tested to destruction” – a code normally used with target drone aircraft. Fate indeterminate.
