The history channel did a documentary on this bomber. My grandfather Shirl J. Hoffman did all 25 before the crew above swapped out and the plane went down.

Hi Kevin: Thanks for the note about your grandfather, Shirl J. Hoffman, who was crew member of the B-17 affectionately called “Betty Boop, the Pistol Packin Mama.” My mother’s first husband, Lenny Baumgartner, was a crew mate with your grandfather. Sgt. Baumgartner was killed on that plane on a bombing run over Rebensburg, Germany on August 17, 1943, when the plane was strafed by a German fighter. How I discovered this fact is quite a story in itself which I have chronicled as part of our family history. If you are interested send me your email address and I will forward that part of the plane’s legacy to you. By the way, my mother is alive, living on her own and doing well at 101 year of age. It really was the ‘greatest generation.” Lynn Matson

My former father in law was Delbert Lambson. He was so interesting to hear the stories of his 18 months as a POW. I salute everyone of these brave men.
