According to 2Lt. Warren S. Lutz, eyewitness and Pilot of an aircraft in the same formation, the following is an account of what occurred on 24 April 1944, to aircraft No. 42-31172: 

At approximately 1355 hours, near Augsburg, Germany, Lt. Schwedock was hit by fighters and two engines began to smoke. I observed several chutes.

Additional information: 2nd Lt. Warren S. Lutz was killed in action five days later, on 29 April 1944, on board B-17 42-31556.
